Stephanie Kirkham

It took just a handful of songs, presented acapella and delivered by post, to ignite the interest of Hut Recordings in their latest signing, Stephanie Kirkham.

Recorded in Dublin and produced by Ian Stanley, Stephanie's debut album That Girl will be released by Hut Recordings in October and contains ten tracks, all written by Stephanie.

The second of five children, born and raised on the outskirts of Preston, Stephanie's artistic endeavors began as a child, drawing and singing. Having left school, she embarked upon a two year art course and then spent a number of years traveling - writing songs and poems along the way.  "I've always found comfort in writing things down and I love it when a song starts brewing and circling around in my head.  The words are whatever's going on and the melody is the emotion beyond", she says.

Stephanie has tried her hand at various careers such as stained glass restoration, window dressing, painting and floristry. It was while working at her mother's flower shop that a friend encouraged her to sing at local 'open mike' nights.  By this time Stephanie had accumulated a stack of ideas on paper, the melodies safely stored in her head. Still unsure of her capabilities as a singer, she eventually committed the songs to tape, took the plunge and posted them to a few record labels.

One of those labels was Hut Recordings, who instantly recognised the potential in those very songs, the first of which, Inappropriate, will be released as a single in July.
